For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession – Deuteronomy 7:6 NIV.
God instructed Abraham to leave his people and go to a place he does not know. He promised him that he would be a father of nations and generations would be blessed through him. We then have Jacob/Israel who in accordance with God’s plan moved his family to Egypt. They were wealthy and became a great nation in a land God placed them in. They were in the perfect will of God, yet they became slaves and suffered for hundreds of years.
Then the Lord delivered them through Moses and all was well. They were full of joy and had so much hope. Still in the perfect will some of them died in the wilderness. They were stretched to an extent that some even wanted to go back to Egypt.
I can’t imagine what it was like to be an Israelite back then, because God promised prosperity (Genesis 28:13-15) yet they were constantly being tested and tormented. I’m sure if it was up to them they wouldn’t want to be part of the story yet through them we have the gospel and the promises of God fulfilled. Their sufferings have given birth to the bible and God has been glorified.
This proves that our current sufferings cannot compare with the glory that will be revealed (Roman 8:18) in us. We choose to persevere because we know God is at work and we will not hinder what He is achieving through us. If we truly believe we are His prized possession then we choose to remain in Him so that His will may prevail (Ephesians 1:11). The alternative is to remove the thorn ourselves and fall out of His perfect will.
