In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you – Matthew 5:48 MSG.
This passage of scripture is taken from the sermon that Jesus gave to the crowds that were following Him. In Matthew 5, the Lord is basically giving out some principles of Christianity. After the principles have been laid down, He then says to them, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Note it is only after Jesus has taught and guided them that He then motivates “perfection”. I believe that this is how our Lord, Jesus Christ wants us to respond to His word whenever we hear it. He wants us having received the word, to strive so that we are perfected through and by that word.
As Christians, we are very privileged because we have the word of God that leads, moulds, teaches and orders our steps. It is important however that after having received that word, we have the responsibility to ensure that we live in accordance to it and are perfected by and through it.
The word of God was given to us so that we can be better beings and conform to the likeness of Christ. If the Word does not make you want to be a better person and motivate change in you, you should be really worried. It is the duty of Christians to desire, aim at and press towards perfection in grace and holiness. And therein we must study to conform ourselves to the example of our heavenly Father. Surely more is to be expected from the followers of Christ than from others; surely more will be found in them than in others. Let us beg of God to enable us to prove ourselves His children. Only He gives enablement!
