For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there – James 3:16.
As children of God our identity is found in Christ. There is nothing for us outside the character of Christ. The desire to distinguish oneself from the rest comes from the world. It is a spirit that seeks to divert attention towards the self, and the quickest way to expose the intents of this kind of thinking is to ask, what will getting ‘all eyes on me’ achieve for people? Because when peoples’ eyes are on Jesus they are set free, they are awakened to God reality and established. When people are drawn to individual awesomeness on display, people worship results, and a loss of identity is inevitable, because this is when people try to be like this celebrity because they focus on the projected attributes. No one is helped, only confusion is produced.
Christ is our perfect example. 1 Peter 1:21-23 “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;”. We all grapple with who to be and how to live, but as Christians this struggle is over. The example of Christs’ character in the book of Peter shows us that a life of purpose is that of selflessness. It’s pursuit is uprightness, truth, humility and trust in God. You can’t be in crisis when your identity has been plainly defined for you in scripture and handed to you – free of charge!
