“for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” – Philippians 2: 13 ESV
As ambassadors for Christ on earth, we have a great responsibility on our shoulders. This responsibility should never ever be taken lightly. We are commissioned to spread the gospel and bring people to the knowledge of Christ, to become witnesses (spreading His aroma). The parable of the talents illustrates the kind of debriefing we are gonna receive in heaven in terms of what we have accomplished with the little we were entrusted with (Luke 12:48b). Our spiritual assets and acquisitions are gonna be audited by the chief accountant in heaven and for our sake, the books must balance. Many unfortunately will not pass the inspection and according to the parable, they will be referred to as evil.
With such a great responsibility and expectation where do we even start our commission? Verse 12 of the above scripture talks about how we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Basically, you must never ever feel or think you have arrived and you know everything about the Kingdom. This humility of realizing that you are nothing without the Holy Spirit will cause you to fear GOD and this will lead to your complete submission. It is this fear and trembling that causes you not to rely on your own abilities but to trust and depend on the Holy Ghost (Proverbs 3:5-6) . When you are completely surrendered and have come to the end of yourself only then can Holy Spirit take over. He will then lead you to do the work GOD has commissioned you to do. It is only through the leading of the Holy Spirit that one can truly obey and fulfill GOD’s mandate for their life.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1: 8 ESV). We can only be witnesses and fulfill this when we are under the guidance and leadership of the Holy Spirit. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and those that fear Him will receive power and become witnesses for our Maker. We are to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (our part) and Holy Spirit will empower and give us the desire to do God’s will (His part) [ Philippians 2:13 NLT].
