“So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ” – Romans 10:17 NLT
An author in America by the name of Jason Stanley wrote a book titled “How Propaganda Works” and it made people realize just how our belief systems are changed and influenced by what we hear. For example, my favourite colour is red and I believe that I came to that conclusion on my own. What if that was influenced by advertisements on TV and the cars I see around me. My notion of what beauty is might actually be influenced by media and their narrative has become my own. During election time political parties spend millions of rands spreading lies about their competitors. I’ve recently realized that I had disliked a deceased celebrity because of what was said about her on TV. When she died the truth came out about a smear campaign directed against her by members of her own political party. Even as you are reading this what areas of your life have been influenced by propaganda?
Satan’s most powerful weapon in his arsenal is propaganda directed against the word of God. How he uses so-called “men of God” to distort God’s word so that their followers may be deceived. Lately, there is propaganda to make the youth believe that initiation is okay, there are now slay sangomas on social media. There are also preachers of the Word telling people that Christians can’t go to hell because Christ has already died for their sins, the grace gospel. Because they have multitudes of followers people take what they say as the truth. You are the sum total of what you hear every day. The above Scripture highlights this critical point that you have to surround yourself with the word of God. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the authentic, unadulterated word of God. In this world where you can’t really trust what you hear and see you have to be very vigilant. Consume yourself with God’s word and it will consume you as well.
“For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34b BSB). When you consume the word of God it fills your heart and what comes out of your mouth is life. This principle is detrimental to the kingdom of darkness hence satan attacks the Word and tries to influence what you hear (e.g parable of the sower). We need to be very sensitive to what we listen to as this subconsciously influences what we believe. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). Feed your mind and your heart with the pure word of God, and everything that comes out of your mouth will minister life. Like the Israelites, before us, we have to be sustained by fresh manna, and not by defrosted and microwaved manna from yesterday.
