“And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’” – Acts 13:22 NKJV
“Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the LORD my GOD with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.” – II Samuel 24:24
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21 NKJV
There is an uncanny relationship between money and the heart that many, until this day, deny. Many of us have hobbies or passions that we will spend crazy amounts of money on. For example, I love cricket and a decent cricket bat costs R5000, and if I was still playing I’d easily spend that money on it. There are others that play golf, others cycle, and on both these sports/activities, you could easily spend R50 000, just as a start. For someone who does not play these sports however, these amounts seem crazy and a waste of money, but for the person who’s passionate about it, it’s more than worth it. For others, it could be clothes, designer hand bags, jewellery, art, cars, real estate, the list goes on.
I believe GOD has made all of us unique, and He has given us different passions and desires. He also gives us, richly, all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17). However, we allow those things to take His place in our hearts and fall into the sin of idolatry. When we should be consistent and faithful in giving, we choose to rather feed our passions. If they come from GOD, GOD is more than able to fund them for us as long as He is the King of our hearts and the centre of our affections.
“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” When we put the Kingdom first, we are storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven. This is an eternal treasure that cannot be stolen. Jesus tells us that in His Father’s house, there are many mansions and “if it were not so, I would have told you”. We can learn a lot from King David in the Scriptures above. He put his money where his mouth was and GOD testified of him as a man after GOD’s own heart. Can GOD say the same about you and I?
When we put the Kingdom first, we are storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven. This is an eternal treasure that cannot be stolen
