“For GOD so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 NKJV
“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” – Genesis 22:2 NLT
As Christians, GOD is our example, and as our Father, we should always seek to emulate Him in all that we do. Just like Jesus, we should strive to do only that which we see the Father doing (John 5:19). GOD gave us Christ to die for us, His one and only begotten Son. What is it that we attach value to? Are we willing to give it up for the sake of others? GOD gave us His BEST, so it is impossible for us to out-give GOD because there is no greater gift than Christ. When we have a heart for GOD (refer to last week’s devotional), our giving flows from the heart and says a lot about our devotion to GOD.
When GOD gave us Jesus, He was motivated by love, our giving and service to GOD should also be motivated by love. “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” I Corinthians 13:3 NKJV. It is possible to give for other reasons and wrong motives, and the Bible tells us that once we receive our applause from men, we have received our reward (Matthew 6:2).
“For now I know that you truly fear GOD. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” Genesis 22:12 NLT. When GOD asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, He specifically asked for the son that Abraham loved. If GOD had asked him to simply sacrifice a son, I believe he would’ve sacrificed Ishmael, not because he didn’t love him but because he loved Isaac more. This is what we do when we give to GOD, we give Him that which we value less. GOD gave us His best, we too should strive to give GOD our best. We are here (born-again) today because of GOD’s love which He showed us by giving us His best. Our giving to GOD will impact lives that we may never get to know about until we reach heaven.
