“They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” – Mark 12:44 NIV
We all know the story of Hannah by now, how in anguish and desperation, she made a covenant with GOD. She wanted a son, yet was willing to live without him. What really challenges me about her is that she made the covenant in poverty (barren at the time) which logically doesn’t make sense. Most of us would have said, “We’ll give to the LORD after we have received a couple of kids.” We probably would have offered the troublesome child instead of our “favorite” child. It is the same thing with the money we offer in church. We first receive it, pay all our bills, and then offer what’s left- what we can live without. Yet she made an oath to give her best even before she possessed it.
“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce” Proverbs 3:9 NLT. I was watching a financial program some time ago, and there is a principle that some finance people strongly believe in. They say that when you get your salary, the first thing you should do is to pay yourself first, before you do anything else with the money. They believe this is the secret to financial freedom. Well, this goes against what the Word says (in Proverbs). This is why the millionaires at the treasury only gave a very small portion of their net worth. They gave what didn’t cost them, whilst the old woman gave everything she had. She gave out of her poverty.
Bill Gates has given away billions of dollars to charity, yet he is still one of the richest people on earth. Clearly there is a mystery in giving. This man, who isn’t Christian, is giving away so much money yet remains wealthy, while most Christians without as much, still have a little. There is a transformation that needs to happen so that we can understand the principles of giving and receiving.
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” Luke 6:38 NLT. From the surface, this Scripture is self explanatory yet many Christians still struggle with giving. Maybe we need to pray for personal revelation of what this Scripture really means. What does it mean to you? Not what your Pastor or church says it means. What does it mean to me? I think my breakthrough lies in it’s true meaning for me.
