“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’” – Luke 11:24 NKJV
“Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him.” – Ephesians 5:18 AMP
For the longest time , even as a Christian, I did not understand what Jesus actually meant regarding demons and unclean spirits returning to their house as mentioned in Luke 11:24-26.I had always thought that once the demon was cast out, it was out, and the person could walk happily in their freedom without any further worry. Why on earth would the same spirit come back with reinforcements, and seven more spirits to be specific? The audacity of it did not make any sense to me. But as one unpacks and goes deeper, it makes very scary sense, that indeed if the person is empty, the only room open is for the spirits who believe they have legal right over “the house” that they once occupied and believed they owned. This shows the depth and intensity with which the devil hates the children of GOD, and will stop at nothing to see them destroyed.
Many Believers and ministers of the gospel, (well meaning, and not) are quick to go off and embark on the mandate Jesus gave when He said, “and you will have authority to drive out demons.” Mark 3:15 GNT. Yes they go out and deliver people, but then leave them, as they are believing their mission is done. Not realising how they have emptied this house (the person), and by not equipping them with the knowledge and understanding of “what to do next”, they have just made them vulnerable to even more destruction in their lives.
Once a person is set free, they must be determined to live for Jesus. They must fill the house with the Word of GOD and with the Holy Spirit. Thus leaving no room for the evil one to enter again. When Jesus told those He set free to, “go and sin no more…” He was giving them the keys that keep spiritual doors locked from demons entering and wreaking havoc in their lives. This is what those of us who have been set free need to remember and live by.
When we make room in our lives, for whom are we making it? Because if we are still dabbling with the things we have been set free from, then we are being unfaithful to GOD and being faithful to the enemy. Unfortunately there is no fence one can sit on in the spirit in order to enjoy the best of both worlds. “Unfaithful people! Don’t you know that to be the world’s friend means to be GOD’s enemy? If you want to be the world’s friend, you make yourself GOD’s enemy.” James 4:4 GNT.
It is Jesus Christ who delivers, and it is He who sustains what He has given. We must have a true relationship with Him as the One who gives us the power we need to be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, and the ability to command evil spirits to go. To be under His authority and fully submitted to Him. Anything contrary to this is a set up and a trap for evil to return in greater power and wrath.
“Put on the full armor of GOD [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemes and the strategies and the deceits of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11 AMP.
