Faith Comes By Hearing And Doubt Comes By Seeing

Faith Comes By Hearing And Doubt Comes By Seeing

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of GOD.” – Romans‬ ‭10‬:‭17‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – II Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

As fully able human beings, we have been given five natural senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, these help us navigate our way around our daily lives. GOD can speak to us using any of these senses but His preferred one is that of hearing. He speaks to us, mainly through His Word. The devil on the other hand, prefers the sense of sight because he’s an opposer of GOD’s Word (we walk by faith and not by sight). So to oppose our faith and what GOD has said, he uses what we see to get us to doubt what GOD has said.

Peter is the perfect example; “So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “LORD, save me!” Matthew‬ ‭14‬:‭29‬-‭30‬ ‭NKJV‬‬. I’m sure you’ve heard ministers say that he was not walking on water but rather on the Word and it was when he SAW the wind that he became afraid, and then doubted the Word, and that’s when he began to sink. It is the things that we see that causes us to fear, which ultimately leads to us doubting GOD’s Word.

“Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭46‬-‭47‬ ‭NKJV‬‬. In the case of blind Bartimaeus, I believe him being blind was a blessing in disguise. He HEARD that Jesus was coming and because he was blind he couldn’t see the crowds, I believe if he had seen the crowds he would’ve been discouraged and would not have cried out as he did to Jesus. “What will all these people say? They will all be looking at me as if I am crazy.”

Technically speaking, if he wasn’t blind, he wouldn’t really need to get to Jesus, but in reality, we, not being blind, still have things that we need Jesus to do for us. Maybe, this is the reason why we don’t go to Him, we allow what we see and “what will people say” to detract us. So we do well when we, not only sit under the teaching of GOD’s Word, but also meditate on that Word and take GOD at His Word. We become “blind” to reality and continue to believe and confess what GOD has said even when it’s contrary to our reality.

So we do well when we, not only sit under the teaching of GOD’s Word, but also meditate on that Word and take GOD at His Word
