“But Samuel said, “What is this you have done?” Saul replied, “I saw my men scattering from me, and you didn’t arrive when you said you would, and the Philistines are at Micmash ready for battle. So I said, ‘The Philistines are ready to march against us at Gilgal, and I haven’t even asked for the LORD’s help!’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.” – 1 Samuel 13:11-12 NLT
One of the hardest things you could ever do in the Kingdom is lead people. The burden that comes with sharing people’s problems/challenges is something that can’t be put into words. I remember one day, one of the people I was leading had an urgent matter that we both felt needed the man of GOD’s wisdom and counsel. I partly agreed to the sit down as I was clueless about what to do, and the situation needed an urgent intervention. So as we were sitting in the man of GOD’s office, the lady unpacked the complicated predicament. When she was finished, it was the man of GOD’s turn to speak. This is the moment when I was waiting in anticipation for, the wisdom and counsel I was about to hear and witness. My ears were itching to hear how the man of GOD was going to come up with a mind-blowing solution to the problem. What he said at that moment surprised me, and I’ll never ever forget it because I didn’t understand it at the time. He said, “My daughter I don’t know what to do. Let’s wait on GOD.” The look on the woman’s face was that of confusion and disbelief. We left the office “without” a solution. GOD did come through on the matter and it was resolved supernaturally to everyone’s satisfaction.
When you lead people and they look up to you, it’s inevitable that you will care for them deeply. Their heartbreaks become your own. Their successes and their failures also become yours. So when they come to you for counsel and guidance it’s VERY TEMPTING to draw from your understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6) to help them. It’s at these moments that you can miss GOD’s plan concerning the matter and advice from head knowledge. This is very dangerous, as you might mislead GOD’s flock under the guise of helping out, knowingly or unknowingly. It takes a spiritual and GOD-led man/ woman of GOD to draw from Holy Spirit. The “problem” is that GOD doesn’t speak when we want Him to speak. His ways are higher than ours, and His thoughts are greater and superior to ours. Which is why the man of GOD refused to cave into the pressure to give his own advice. He’s had many years of experience counseling his flock and he probably could have come up with a solution. Yet he didn’t do so because he was cognizant of the fact that GOD leads and guides His own children as He sees fit. He wasn’t going to speak just for the sake of speaking.
Saul knew what he needed to do as he had already been given an instruction. He knew he needed to wait for the man of GOD and not take matters into his own hands. Yet when those around him pressured him, he caved in. When the situation was turning dire he disobeyed GOD. A Spirit-led and Spirit-filled man always draws inspiration and guidance from Holy Spirit. They are never anxious and double-minded, as they always know what GOD’s mind is concerning every situation they encounter. They never act on impulse or out of desperation. As a result, their path is always fruitful and stress-free. The Bible has many examples of how Christ always got the better of those who were against Him. The Pharisees always set up traps for Him, yet He overcame and outsmarted them EVERY SINGLE TIME. This is because He always depended on the Holy Spirit for guidance (John 5:19).
“From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take” 1 Chronicles 12:32 NLT. These men didn’t make decisions on a whim but depended on GOD. They knew EXACTLY what they ought to do in every situation. This is how a spiritual man ought to conduct himself and his affairs. Not on a whim or a “sixth sense”, but on the counsel and the guidance of the Spirit. The world calls it a sixth sense, we call Him, Holy Spirit.
