Stop Speaking And Just Listen

“Then He said, “I am the GOD of your father, the GOD of Abraham, the GOD of Isaac and the GOD of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at GOD” – Exodus 3:6 NIV

When GOD introduced Himself to Moses and the Israelites, He could have said, “I’m the GOD that created the heavens and earth, the beginning and the end. The Alpha and the Omega. The one true GOD, the great I Am”. He could have said all this, yet He chose to introduce Himself as the GOD of his forefathers. He did this because He knew that their forefathers had walked with the LORD and they knew who He was, and they could attest to His power and faithfulness. They learned about Him through their forefathers.

In the same way, we call Him the GOD of Abraham, He was faithful and just to Abraham. Who then later on imparted his trust and experiences with GOD to his own son Isaac. Isaac grew up trusting and serving the LORD, and as a result, also passed along that experience to his own son Jacob.

We learn about who GOD is through our elders, most of us, through our grandparents. We saw it with our own eyes, the unwavering and unshaken faith that they had in His name. At times, we did not understand why they believed and served a GOD that they had never seen, while our relatives worshiped “gods” they knew and lived with their entire lives. It’s when GOD supernaturally comes through in our personal lives, because of the heartfelt and genuine prayers that our grandmothers offered, that we too saw the power in the GOD of our grandmothers. Basically, our whole walk with the LORD is as a result of all the lessons we learned from them.

“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry” James 1:19 NLT. We live in an era where everyone is an expert and everyone has an opinion about everything. This is where the learning stopped, as we have forsaken the art of listening and actually learning from those who know more than we do. We are quick to speak instead of being quick to listen. This is also the reason why most can’t even wait on the LORD as they have lost the ability to listen, always in a hurry to speak. It’s only when we humble ourselves and listen, that others more versed than us can impart their knowledge and counsel.

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck” Proverbs 1: 8-9 NIV. Stop speaking, just listen as you may just learn something.

It’s only when we humble ourselves and listen, that others more versed than us can impart their knowledge and counsel.
