“Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king” – 1 Samuel 16:1b

After the LORD had rejected Saul as King, he instructed Samuel to go to the house of Jesse. There the LORD would reveal to him who He had chosen as King. When Samuel was there and he saw Eliab, he thought to himself, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD”. The LORD rejected him and all Jesse’s sons that were presented to him, all seven of them. Then the eighth son eventually came and was anointed as King. The Bible even tells us that from that very moment, the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David.

So this clearly means that David is the anointed of GOD, the one chosen and approved by Him. This would obviously mean ALL of David’s problems are things of the past. Well, that’s what you’d think but this was just the beginning of his heartache and tribulations. He was eventually forced to flee and hide in caves. At one moment, when he was presented before Achish King of Gath, he had to pretend like he was manic so as to avoid possible execution. The Bible says, he let his saliva run down his beard (1 Samuel 21:10-15). When all of this was happening, he was the anointed King of Israel yet he was busy drooling so that they would free him. Can you imagine how embarrassing that must have been?

He had to accept the hostility from a man he looked up to, knowing full well that he was innocent. This was the sufferings and the struggles he had to endure as the blessed of the LORD. He wore this armour of persecution with grace and humility. Even when he had the opportunity to kill his “enemy”, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. This is the end result of all the struggles that were designed and allowed by GOD. These chains achieved their desired end goal, which was to transform him into a usable vessel of GOD. During all of this, David never lost even a single battle. He overcame everything that was put his way. GOD now refers to him as a man after His own heart. This is because, after all the heartache he never turned his back away from GOD but remained steadfast and overcame everything.

“And I am certain that GOD, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns” – Philippians 1:6 NLT. Nothing can ever separate us from our Father. Neither persecution nor trial could ever make us give up our hope and reject the Gospel. Don’t get it twisted, the fire is real (very real). We are hard-pressed on every side, and sometimes it may even seem like there is no light in sight. As Pastor Fancy once said, that some of these weapons formed against us may seem to be prospering, yet we are resolute in our stance. For we KNOW (we don’t hope, but we know) that He who began a good work in us will complete it. Victory isn’t just a desired outcome, but is one that is assured. We are destined for greatness and the crown we will receive at the end will attest, not only to GOD’s faithfulness, but also to our stubborn faith.

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which GOD has promised to those who love Him” (James 1:12 ESV). Just remain STEADFAST.
