”And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.“ Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

During my time working in the bank, I learned about the security features of banknotes. We weren’t taught to identify counterfeit notes, but instead, we focused on knowing the authentic ones so well that we could easily spot a fake. I believe that we can apply this principle to our Christian walk as well. While we may not know all the enemy’s tricks and lies, knowing GOD’s Word intimately enables us to recognize deception.

Deception can take many forms, from subtle lies to outright manipulation, such as false teachings or deceitful individuals, or from within, as we rationalize our own sinful desires. The consequences of deception are severe, leading us down a path of destruction and away from GOD’s truth. As 1 John 4:1 reminds us, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of GOD; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

There is hope! We are called to “test the spirits” and discern truth from lies, not just the obvious lies but also the almost-truths. By seeking GOD’s wisdom and guidance and clinging to His Word, we can navigate the midst of deception. Just as we would seek out authentic banknotes and reject counterfeits, we must prioritize GOD’s truth and reject falsehoods. Let us be vigilant in discerning truth and holding fast to GOD’s Word.
