“A person finds joy in giving an apt reply— and how good is a timely word!” – Proverbs 15:23 NIV

The brain can be divided into three parts that all play a crucial role in maintaining our existence. They are the cerebrum, cerebellum, and midbrain. The cerebellum plays an important role in balance and coordination. It is made up of two hemispheres (left and right). The right hemisphere controls balance and coordination of the right side of the body, and left, the left side of the body. Alcohol, when consumed in large quantities, becomes a toxin to the cerebellum, causing it to not operate optimally. This is why during traffic stops, the police will ask a culprit to perform certain movements to show if the cerebellum is functioning optimally or if it has been affected by alcohol. This is why when people are drunk, they can’t walk in a straight line and tend to fall and trip, a phenomenon called Ataxia. This toxic effect on the cerebellum is temporary, and as soon as alcohol isn’t in your blood, you make a full recovery. In chronic alcoholics, this toxic effect of alcohol can lead to permanent (shrinking) damage (after many years of heavy consumption) of the cerebellum, and these people look, talk, and walk like they are drunk even when they haven’t consumed alcohol. I’m sure we all know alcoholics from our townships who always look like they are drunk, this is because of Cerebellar Degeneration (CD), caused by chronic alcohol consumption.

“Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ” Philippians 1:27a NLT. Christ once said, “By their fruits, you shall see them”. This means, those who are always walking in the fullness and guidance of the Holy Spirit are easy to see, as their demeanor and conduct will be in keeping with the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Like the drunk man trying to mask the fact that he is drunk, so is one walking in the fullness of the Holy Ghost, he will be clearly visible. In the same way you can see that someone is a chronic alcoholic even though you seeing them for the first time, you can also see someone who’s full of the Holy Spirit. Their fruits are very apparent to everyone who sees or speaks to them.

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” Luke 6:45 NKJV. The part that has always killed me in this verse is when it says, “Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” This means, he who is full of life and the Holy Spirit, will automatically speak life and spirit-feeding words. These are the people that, whenever you are feeling down and you spend a few minutes with, you leave better than the way you came. In the same way Jesus said the words He speaks are spirit and they’re life, those full and drunk with the Spirit speak nothing but life.

The call to revival for Christians is of utmost importance as we may not see or know the state we are in currently, and this call is to alert us to evaluate, test, and examine our current state. This is the love of GOD, in that, He doesn’t want us to be drunk with worldly/carnal things for too long, lest we become desensitized and die in sin. In the same manner, the alcoholic will eventually reach a point of no return (CD), revival calls us back to our rightful state so that we don’t go into a sinner’s coma. A state where we are no longer sensitive to correction from the Holy Ghost. Let those who have ears…
