Honoring Divine Mentorship

“If you teach a wise person, he will become even more wise. If you teach a righteous person, he will learn whatever you tell him.” – Proverbs‬ ‭9‬:‭9‬ ‭EASY‬‬

“And when they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” He said, “You have asked for a difficult thing. However, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” – 2 Kings‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭AMP‬‬

When I was still in school, there was a program called, “Job Shadowing”, in which you would spend time and a day with someone who’s in the career you’d like to embark on, and then you’d learn from them and get an understanding of what you are getting yourself in to. Once one has graduated, there’s the option of being mentored by someone considered great in your industry of choice or who has enough experience and achievements in their field to pay it forward and guide the aspiring new employee.

The workspace is not the only area of life in which we need guidance and wisdom, and allowing someone to lead and guide us in any area of life takes a lot of humility and respect towards that person. This is even more so when things pertain to the things of GOD. A lot of the great people used in the Bible did not come across as light or easy to get along with (especially the prophets). So those who were to succeed them would have had to be incredibly patient, respectful, humble, and determined to learn from their wisdom and knowledge. Elisha as an example, had to hold on tightly to Elijah in order to get from him what he needed to be great going forward. A double portion of Elijah’s spirit comes with wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and power. The trials Elisha must have gone through before and after in order to be worthy of all of that, cannot be imagined.

For all of us who look at leaders we admire and desire to have what they have, it is important to count the cost of what that means. To ask ourselves if we are willing to walk the paths they have walked and carry the load they have carried. Perhaps some of us missed out on great opportunities because we looked down on those GOD sent to impart knowledge and wisdom to us, and perhaps we failed to humble ourselves and honor them when we needed to.

“If you become proud, something will soon destroy you. But if you are humble, you will soon receive honor.” Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭12‬ ‭EASY‬‬. In order to be honored, we must learn to honor those who have gone before us. King Solomon knew that, in order to be great and to fill his father’s shoes, he would have to draw greatly on his wisdom. Hence his request to GOD was for the one thing that would help him uphold his father’s legacy and do even greater.

“Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do. Whatever else you get, get insight. Love wisdom, and she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will bring you honor.” Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭GNT‬‬. With all that humans generally desire in their lifetime, wisdom is the one attribute that makes the path to greatness lighter and so much more worthy. Embracing wisdom comes with embracing the carriers of that gift. So when we see those GOD has made great and those who carry His Spirit, and when we are blessed enough to be in their midst, we would do best to humble ourselves before them and draw as much from them as we can. It is easy for The Holy Spirit to pour into us through multiple streams of greatness when we are open to those He brings into our lives to share their pearls of wisdom.

With all that humans generally desire in their lifetime, wisdom is the one attribute that makes the path to greatness lighter and so much more worthy.
