Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion – Proverbs 11:22 NIV.
I thank the Lord every single day when I hear His word being preached, and it teaches and corrects me. Last week on a Wednesday night at church, we received a wonderful message from Ps Vuyani Dombo titled ‘The Heart Of A Warrior” [available on the KOSM Facebook page if you have not had a chance to listen to it]. In this message, God was saying to me that nothing avails anything unless a person’s heart is a good place. We are in a great season, a battlefield, a season of warfare and the Lord has been teaching us the weapons of warfare. When the message was preached however on Wednesday, I thought to myself that the weapons of warfare will not help me in anyway if my heart is not dealt with and is not on the right place.
This made me realise the importance of having a heart that is dealt with. See, most often we focus much on the external things and forget the core thing which is the heart. We can pray as much as we can, read the word of God from Genesis to Revelation, be the most active ones in serving at church and all that you can possibly think of, but if our hearts are not dealt with and are not in the right place then all the activities will sum up to nothing. You cannot be an overcomer if you do not have a heart of an overcomer, you cannot be a servant if you do not have a servant’s heart, and so forth. So if you want to know who you really are, check your heart, it cannot lie to you.
A beautiful ring in a pig’s snout does not change the fact that a pig is a pig and is filthy. In the same manner, the activities we do will not change our state of being if our hearts are not made right. The golden ring is also a symbol of a treasure, no matter how treasurable what we do or what God is giving us (weapons of warfare) may be, we will not be made better by it just like how the pig is not made better by the golden ring. What will make us better is a heart that has been dealt with. It is important that we never forget to pray for God to thoroughly deal with our hearts because a heart that is at a right place is a true adornment to a child of God. Create in me a clean heart, and renew the right spirit within me [Psalm 51:10].
