Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock – Matthew 7:24 NASB.
In the Bible [Luke 6:46.49], Jesus described two men who each built a house. He didn’t mention any difference between their skills and resources. The only variable He identified was where each chose to build. Jesus noted that, based on their choices, one man was wise and the other was foolish. The wise man chose a proper foundation and built an enduring house, upon the rock. The foolish man labored to build a house upon sand and his house and labor were lost. When a storm came, the house built into the rock survived the downpour, but the house on the sand was demolished. Jesus even stated, “And great was its fall,” meaning that it was beyond repair.
In Matthew 7:24, Jesus says that a wise man is the one who builds on a rock, and he hears and then acts on the word of God. In other words, the Scriptures are a powerful foundation for living wisely and abundantly, weathering the inevitable storms of life and moving forward. If we do not put these sayings of Christ to practice, i.e. the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount, our spiritual house will fall in this life and come to utter ruin in the world to come.
We ought to live by the Word and by it alone. Our character, conduct and even our life decisions should be founded by the word of God. The Lord is tired of Christians who always hear, read and even memorize the Word and yet do nothing about it. What you do about the Word after you have heard it is what guarantees your endurance in your walk with God. So be ye not just the good listeners but also good doers of the word.
