Jesus Christ is before all things, and in him all things hold together – Colossians 1:17.
I often narrate a story to those around me how my journey in Christianity changed when I lost focus on what Christianity is really all about. When I initially accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I really did not know much about Him. All I knew was that there is a God in heaven who is willing to give me eternal life and I was taken by that. I spent all my days building my relationship with this God because eternity with Him sounded so great, I mean who would not want to live forever and escape hell? All that really mattered to me at that point was God and me being in right standing with Him and believe me when I say there was nothing I could not do to be made right with Him.
As the time went by, I began to learn more and more about this God. I got to know that over and above eternity, the relationship with this God also comes with blessings and miracles. This to me was both freedom and a point of distraction. I say it was a point of distraction because as soon as I discovered the blessings that come with being a child of God, my focus changed from this God who wants to give me life in abundance to this God who wants to give me material blessings. I became so obsessed with ways and means of getting these blessings I thought I deserved and neglected cultivating the relationship I had with God and boy was I miserable from that point onwards.
I think it is always important to remind ourselves as Christians that Christianity is all about Jesus and everything else is just a bonus. Our focus should not be on “how do I obtain the promises/blessings of God” but rather on “how do I work on bettering the relationship I have with God”. It is easy to miss God while focusing on the “rewards/benefits” that come with being a Christian and we actually forget that the rewards come after having a good relationship with the rewarder. The Bible says that God rewards those who diligently seek a relationship with Him. Set your mind straight, set your priorities straight, it is about Jesus first before it is about anyone and anything else. Do not be deceived, if you seek Him first, all other things will be added to you.
