The LORD will fight for you, and all you have to do is keep still – Exodus 14:14, GNB.
In this passage of Scripture, GOD had just taken the Israelites out of Egypt and they were on their way to Canaan. At this point and time, the Egyptian army was still pursuing after them so that they could recapture and enslave them once more. In the midst of all this, the Israelites see before them a sea, they feel stranded, they feel there is no way they can move any further than this.
I think at this point they started to panic, they perhaps even made up their minds that their journey ended there, and that they were going back to slavery in Egypt. In this state, Moses says to them, “The Lord will fight for you, all you have to do is to keep still.” I’d probably be standing there as an Israelite thinking that this man is really just being ridiculous right now.
In our English language, being still means being quiet, silent, calm, inactive. So my enemy and tormenter is pursuing me and I seem to be at a dead end, I am in distress and now a person comes to me to tell me that I need to be still, calm, silent? Honestly, this is really ridiculous. How many of us in the rush and noise of life can actually reach down within ourselves and be still? We are the “no one messes with me” type of Christians, a touch is a move. We are very quick to speak and very fast to act.
GOD does not fight for such people, His Word says that He fights for those who keep still. Look back on the times you were sucked up by your calamities, the times you thought GOD failed to come to your rescue. Was it not because you were too quick to speak or act for yourself? Was it not because GOD was not given allowance to fight on your behalf? GOD does not say we are more than conquerors because He believes we are strong enough to fight for ourselves, He says it because He knows that He already won the victory for us. Keep still, do less and speak less, GOD is fighting for you.
We are very quick to speak and very fast to act; GOD does not fight for such people, His Word says that He fights for those who keep still
