Bondage To Freedom

Bondage To Freedom

Main text: 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

In Romans 12:2 Apostle Paul appeals to the church not to default back into their former mental state, from which they were once saved, but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. What stands between the putting off of the old man and the putting on of the new man is the mind of a believer. Transformation takes place in the mind (Ephesians 4:22-24). We, Christians, must mature in our minds: attitude, mentality and mindset. The way we think and understand determines the course of our lives.

Baby Christians have a tendency of backsliding (Ephesians 4:14-15). We should no longer be children but should grow up in all things into Jesus Christ. Most believers are trapped in the area of not growing. The elemental, fundamental and basic principles of GOD are for growing up, not to plateau on them. We neither please nor glorify GOD when are not growing.

We need to watch and take care of our minds, lest our own thoughts bring us into captivity to disobedience against Jesus (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). Spiritual warfare occurs in the mind of born-again children of GOD. It is possible to teach people the same pure principles of the Word without them coming to understanding, only accumulating head knowledge but not transforming.

Some characteristics/traits of baby Christians that we learn about in Scripture:

  1. Baby Christians are carnal, worldly and fleshly (1 Corinthians 3:1-3). If we do not grow, we are carnal and still think at the level of the people of this world.
  2. Baby Christians are barren and unfruitful (2 Peter 1:5-9).  We receive the word in our hearts for it to accomplish what GOD sends it, but many churchgoers hear the word every other day and yet still don’t understand it (Matthew 13:14). Holy Spirit opens our minds for us to understand the Scriptures and without understanding of the Scriptures there is no growth or maturity (Luke 24:45).
  3. Baby Christians cannot be entrusted with true riches of the Kingdom (Galatians 4:1). Although we are born again and the things of the Kingdom belong to us, but for as long as we are babes, we cannot be entrusted with them.
  4. Baby Christians cannot be entrusted with power and responsibility (Ecclesiastes 10:16). GOD is looking for believers who are growing that He can entrust with responsibility. However, baby believers are blind insofar as the things of GOD are concerned.

It is neither normal nor fashionable that children of GOD are not growing or maturing, and it is wrong to have full benefits of the kingdom of GOD and yet not be trusted to receive them. We must surrender our minds to the Holy Spirit for it is He who transforms us into the image of Jesus Christ from glory to glory. We need to grow by the pure milk of the Word for a full experience of salvation. The word of GOD comes on purpose and for purpose, and we will be held liable and responsible for the pure word we received.

The way we think and understand determines the course of our lives
