To be born again, saved or made into God’s child is difficult to put into words, since it’s entirely a spiritual transaction. So much so that even most people who call themselves or believe they are Christian don’t know or understand it. Jesus broached the subject to one Jewish leader called Nicodemus, and of course He threw the man completely out of kilter. Later we find Peter, in 1 Peter 1:23, using the same phrase. Holy Spirit through the mouth of prophet Ezekiel let us in on this blessed promise that would be the reserve of generations to come. We’re the ‘generations’ foretold.
John sheds a floodlight on the subject in John 1:12-13, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” Sons or children of GOD are those born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. There’s clear exclusion here: no blood relation, no human contribution, effort or will. By power it means by the Holy Spirit and by the will of GOD it means GOD determined. So how one is born again is a mystery according to John 3:8, “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” Very important, Holy Spirit is the One who leads an unbeliever to salvation, and sustains him throughout afterward.
When we’re born again we’re made new in righteousness and holiness, and in the image of GOD, which is the image of Jesus Christ. So we become like Jesus to GOD, “For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings,” Hebrews 2:10. Also 2 Corinthians 5:16, “Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh.” Because we are now born (again) of the Spirit, and not of the flesh. Hence verse 17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
When you are born again, you’re a new man; your old flesh nature – thinking, passions, cravings, will, emotions, proclivities are all gone. You are born again with a new heart and mind from GOD. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them,” Ezekiel 36:26-27. This is current reality of the born-again. Henceforth, it’s by your new heart or spirit that you are joined to GOD, “But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him,” I Corinthians 6:17. GOD is Spirit, now you’re also spirit, no longer flesh, otherwise, you couldn’t be one with Him. You and GOD are one, are the same God kind, class or DNA – after you’re born again. Secondly, it’s by your new heart or spirit that you’ve been whooshed into the Kingdom of GOD, “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son,” Colossians 1:13.
