“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” – Galatians 5:16
The word of God says that the person who is justified by faith has no obligation to the flesh. He has no debt to the flesh and no duty whatsoever to the flesh. The flesh has no right to compel this person to do it’s bidding. Paul explains in the book of Romans that this is because our old selves were crucified with Christ so that our body of sin might be done away with, we should no longer be slaves to sin (Romans 6:6). What this means for us is that GOD and His righteousness are our only masters, not the flesh. I believe carnality is our worst enemy as Christians and I find it really frustrating how our flesh frequently demands us to think or do things other than what we should be thinking or doing at that moment. It tirelessly seeks to powerfully influence us away from the gospel. The lust of the flesh is very destructive and opposed to GOD. It comes from within the heart and mind of mankind, and we all suffer from this or other to some degree, no one is exempted. A person may not have a weakness of sorcery or fornication, but they may be weak in drunkenness, anger, or jealousy.
With that being said, GOD has not left us without the things we need to have the victory over the lust of the flesh. He has given us many things to enable us to fight our own passions, the main gift being the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to transform us into the image of Jesus Christ, and that means specifically to help us overcome the lusts of the flesh. Carnality can only be defeated by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in one’s life. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we gain enablement to fight against the flesh and win. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to put to death and to overcome the deeds of the body, which are the desires of the flesh. We will never have complete victory in this life over our flesh if we insist on trying to do things in our own power instead of God’s power through the Holy Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit that our lives will be marked by less sin and more holiness. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to fulfill the righteous duties that GOD has revealed to us in His Word (Romans 8:4).
We cannot afford to capitulate to the sins that pervade our minds. We must resist and subdue those thoughts. We must abstain from fleshy lust. I do not know about you, but I know the struggle is real. There are desires and thoughts that I have to fight and resist daily. I have to remind myself every day that as a believer I have no right to live according to the world’s standards because they are so far below me. I only need to focus on Christ who is in Heaven and obey His ways which forbid such sins and immoralities. We ought to walk in the Spirit at all times.
It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to fulfill the righteous duties that GOD has revealed to us in His Word
