“Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.” – Proverbs 9:8 NKJV
When GOD places us in the position of being rebuked, He is announcing to us that He loves us. Many of us have a misconception as to how GOD expresses His love for us and we have made up ideologies on how one can tell that they are indeed loved by GOD. GOD does not just express His love to us through blessings, gifts, houses, cars, or the goosebumps we feel when He is in our midst. He also confirms His love when He corrects and rebukes us hence His word says; “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:19). As GOD’s children, we are never supposed to be without direction or guidance. When one says that they belong to GOD, then GOD is obligated to lead and guide them wherever He wants them to go. Wisdom assures you even during the procession of rebuke that you are loved, and that the rebuke comes only because the next person desires what is best for you. Rebuke does not come to destroy but rather is designed to develop spiritual insight, character, or capability. That’s why the word of God says rebuke is for the wise and not the foolish.
I believe the reason some of us, Christians, are not growing to the magnitude that GOD desires is that we have rejected GOD’s chastening and correction. This rejection leads to a lack of direction in our lives as Christians. If we are wise, we will embrace rebuke even though it is painful because it is intended to shave the flesh and mature the spirit. So, even though our flesh may be hurting when receiving rebuke, we should be glad that our spirit man is being matured. Praise GOD always for a shepherd that has been entrusted with your life, that is willing to rebuke and chasten you because it means that they love you. Most spiritual leaders don’t rebuke anymore because of the fear of incurring the people’s anger or retaliation. If you are one of those who retaliate when rebuked then your heart is very far from GOD because those who are truly His, He chastens. We all need a steady diet of friendly correction because our hearts are still susceptible to sin even when we are in Christ.
