Characteristics Of A Disciple

Characteristics Of A Disciple

Sunday Message Summary, 15 August 2021

The modern church is focused on membership instead of discipleship, but it is discipleship that we are called to in the Kingdom of God. Church members are Christians who come to church for their own interests, they do not know Jesus, and so they worship Him whom they do not know.  The people who will inherit the Kingdom of heaven however are disciples. What are the characteristics of a disciple? True disciples are those to whom Jesus is Master. Disciples are dead to self, they are led, and they have a goal – Jesus.

1. A disciple has a teachable spirit.

A disciple is a servant, one who is under authority, who receives instructions (Matthew 28:19-20). A true disciple is therefore eager to learn, to listen, and most importantly, to do what they have heard. Furthermore, only those who are doers of the Word qualify to teach others, so those who teach must first and foremost be taught themselves.

2. A disciple is one who is growing in revelation knowledge of GOD, growing in intimacy and closeness with GOD.

GOD is the revealer of Jesus, and Jesus is the revealer of the Father, but this experience is only for disciples. Jesus is not real to a lot of church members because Jesus reveals Himself to a doer of the Word, one who has the Word of GOD and obeys it (John 14:21). This is the person who lives the Word and lives by the Word. It is to disciples that Jesus wills to reveal the Father because the life that the LORD has come to give us is not in the head knowledge, but in the revealed knowledge. GOD also reveals mysteries and secrets to a disciple who has a revelation of GOD, who knows Him (Ephesians 1:17 AMPC), but a disciple that is not growing in the knowledge of GOD will soon become irrelevant and useless because a Christian with no revelation is blind. Revelation knowledge is promised to disciples through the Holy Spirit, and Jesus is still speaking to His disciples through the Holy Spirit, to this very day (John 16:13-14).

3. A disciple is one who reads and meditates on the Word.

Growing in the knowledge of GOD and in intimacy with GOD, means growing in the Scriptures (John 5:39). If we do not see Jesus in the Scriptures, we are already in error because Jesus can only be known or reveal Himself through the Word. We read and meditate on the Word because the Word reveals Jesus.

4. A disciple is a diligent seeker of GOD (Hebrews 11:6)

We seek GOD by reading and meditating on the Word, because the Bible reveals Jesus and the Father. The Word that comes to pass is the Word that is first part and parcel of our hearts, transforming us from the inside out.

5. A disciple is one who is progressively being transformed by the Holy Spirit, through His Word.

The more we see Jesus in the Word, the more we are being transformed into His likeness, from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). In fact, the only way we can be pleasing to GOD is when we are progressively being transformed by the Holy Spirit, through His Word, from glory to glory. An unchanged, non-growing believer is irrelevant and useless in the Kingdom.

A disciple that is not growing in the knowledge of GOD will soon become irrelevant and useless
