How To Deal With The Flesh

How To Deal With The Flesh

Sunday Message Summary, 3 October 2021

The day of Christ’s return is almost upon us (Romans 13:12), and the One who is coming soon does not want any of His children to be lost and destroyed. We must therefore put off the works of darkness and live in the light, conducting ourselves properly and honorably as in the light of day (Romans 13:13 AMP), because even though we are born again, we may find ourselves not ready when the LORD returns, like the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13). When we seek after the things of the flesh it indicates that we have fallen into a state of spiritual slumber, and we have become spiritually complacent, indifferent, apathetic, and lukewarm, being spiritually disconnected from GOD. Therefore, when we indulge in the things of the flesh, when the LORD comes, we would have disqualified ourselves. The devil is running a crusade for people to end up in eternal death using the improper desires of the flesh, so it is critically important that we deal with the flesh in this way:

1. We must make no provision for the flesh in regard to its improper desires (Romans 13:14 AMP)

We should not feed what is a stumbling block in our lives, but we must deny the flesh. We have power for us to live holy lives which comes from the Holy Spirit, however if we don’t deny the flesh, GOD will not stop it for us. GOD has already done His part, so it is now our part to rid ourselves of things of the flesh. GOD will not do for us what He has already abundantly availed His grace for us to do.

2. We should not think about or focus on our fleshly lusts, desires, cravings, appetites, and how to satisfy them (Romans 13:14 AMPC).

We must put a stop to thinking about the evil provisions of our physical nature, not entertaining nor accommodating them in our minds. If we think about something long enough, we will end up doing it, so when we set our minds on evil thoughts, evil things will come out of us (Mark 7:20-23 NLT). We need to set our minds on holy things, because our minds will not automatically focus on good and holy things.

3. We must seek the things of GOD by setting our minds on the Word of God (Colossians 3:1-10 AMP).

There is a way of life that is prescribed for children of GOD, which is in the Spirit, and not in the flesh, however, what our minds are set on is the direction our entire lives will follow. We must therefore consciously, voluntarily, and actively seek the things that are above, setting our minds on them, depriving of power the evil longings of the flesh. When we are growing in the flesh we are dying in the spirit, and when we are growing spiritually, we are dying to the flesh. We cannot espouse both the Spirit and the flesh, and when we set our minds on things of this world, we make ourselves enemies of the cross (Philippians 3:18 AMP). Friendship with the world is loving the things of this world, and when we befriend the world, we defriend GOD (James 4:4 NKJV).

4. We must abstain from fleshly lusts, desires, cravings, and longings (1 Peter 2:11 NKJV/AMPC).

To abstain, stay away, and flee from the desires of the flesh is our part to play, and we abstain from all uncleanness by following the leading of the Holy Spirit. When we don’t abstain, we are growing in the flesh and dying in the spirit. Everything for us is in the spirit, so what stands between us receiving what rightly belongs to us is the flesh.

5. We must be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

We must not be full of sensual indulgence, but we must empty the flesh, and be filled with the Spirit. When we accelerate in the flesh, we are getting devoid of the Spirit (Jude 1:17-19 AMP), so the more flesh we tolerate, the less spiritual we become.

6. We must pray continually in the Spirit (Jude 1:20 NKJV/AMP).

As often as we pray, aided, enabled, and led by the Holy Spirit, we grow stronger and stronger in the spirit man.

7. We must meet with like-minded, Spirit-filled believers (Hebrews 10:25 NLT/TPT).

When we come to church, it is the perfect will of GOD, because every believer needs other believers. If we pull away in this time, we have wrongly chosen because the LORD is coming soonest. Instead, we should come together even more frequently.

When we are growing in the flesh we are dying in the spirit, and when we are growing spiritually, we are dying to the flesh.
