“And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The LORD is with you, you mighty man of [fearless] courage.” – Judges 6:12 AMPC

“Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” – Judges 6:14 NLT

We all want to be used by GOD in a mighty and powerful way. We want to impact this world and bring its people to the knowledge of who GOD is. As Christians, we genuinely want to be usable vessels full of the power of GOD. The problem is that most of us don’t believe we can be used that powerfully, we believe that others are better equipped than us. This may be because our society may have led us to believe that we aren’t good enough. Some may have even heard these words coming from their loved ones. Gideon, in the above Scripture, also doubted his own abilities and was puzzled by why GOD would choose a worthless coward like him.

What I like most is how the angel addressed Gideon during this encounter. “You mighty (fearless) man of courage”. If you know Gideon, you also know that there was nothing courageous or fearless about him in the physical. Yet in the spirit, according to GOD, he was fearless and courageous. This shows a critical point about flesh vs Spirit. GOD (Spirit) tells you who you are and the potential you have, while the flesh (under satan’s control) convinces you that you are the opposite of what GOD says you are. It’s only under the guidance and control of the Holy Spirit that we tap into an endless well of opportunities/possibilities. In the spirit, we draw strength and power from GOD and it’s in this realm that we ought to always remain, as this is our natural habitat. In the physical, there is no dispute that we are feeble and worthless beings and this is why satan uses his power and influence to keep us trapped in this state. It’s only the Holy Spirit who can truly show you your full potential, and He does this when we are fully surrendered to Him.

“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from GOD, not from ourselves” 2 Corinthians 4:7 NLT. We are fragile jars that carry this treasure and the works we do in Christ prove that it’s not by our might, but because of this treasure. People know we are as feeble as they are but the works that we do are supernatural. This is only possible when we are under His influence and guidance because without Him we are under the control of the flesh (satan). This is why as a Christian you will remain an unpolished gem that has so much potential yet never come into its own if you are still in the flesh and under its control. This is what the world refers to as “a diamond in the rough” – our talents/potential are hidden and require someone to unearth them, and that someone is the Holy Spirit.

Mary, Gideon, Samuel, Moses, Saul, Peter, Phillip, Stephen, and Timothy (the list is endless), are examples of diamonds that only came into their own when they had submitted everything to the Holy Spirit. Phillip and Stephen were initially insignificant yet they had so much impact in their time. The Bible then explains how Stephen was able to achieve so much “Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people” Acts 6: 8NIV. 

It’s only the Holy Spirit who can truly show you your full potential, and He does this when we are fully surrendered to Him.
