A Spirit-Led Life (Part 2)

A Spirit-Led Life (Part 2)

Sunday Message Summary, 17 October 2021

We cannot explain how people are born of the Spirit, how they are led of the Spirit and how they grow by the Spirit (John 3:8). All we know is that we must seek the LORD by looking into the Scriptures. When we consistently gaze into the Word of GOD, we are constantly and permanently being changed (2 Corinthians 3:18 AMPC). As we gaze into the Word, the Holy Spirit is there to help us to grow in Christ Jesus. Our spiritual growth and transformation are therefore the work being done by the Holy Spirit in us through the Word of God. None of us can grow without the Word and the Holy Spirit. We do not just grow in spirit by the accumulation of knowledge, but when we obey and do the Word of God through the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:22). Spiritual growth is a natural result of being led by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will teach us everything (John 14:26). There cannot be preaching or teaching without the Holy Spirit, because man operating on human level cannot understand the things of God (1 Corinthians 2:13-14). No one knows the things of God except by the Spirit of God, so the things that GOD has prepared for those who love him can only be revealed by and received through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9-12). Therefore, all spiritual blessings are predicated upon being led, taught, and growing in the spirit. The great Teacher of all Christians lives within us and He teaches us everything that we need to know, but He won’t open and study the Bible for us because that is our function to do. We must do the best we can, be eager and diligent, studying the Word of God (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV). We need to study the Word of God to please GOD, to grow and to mature.

The will of GOD is that we must grow. If we remain immature perpetually, we will be taken by any and every doctrine that sounds close to the truth but it’s not. Deception always sounds and acts like the truth, but those that are mature are able to discern in the spirit. Spiritual discernment is thus a function of growth in the spirit. Rightly dividing the Word is handling the Word of GOD skillfully, but to rightly divide the Word is a function of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit we will always be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine. We therefore do not need to follow and look unto false teachers, but the Holy Spirit will teach us all things (1 John 2:27 NLT). There are stages of growth in the spirit, but it is only when by the help of the Holy Spirit we understand the Word of GOD, that we will grow in spirit.

Immaturity limits believers from what they can be in Christ, what they can receive, and what Christ can do in and through them (1 Corinthians 3:1-3a NIV). Infants cannot move in the spirit, because as a baby is in the physical, so are those who are immature, and not growing in the spirit. The exhortation therefore is for everyone to grow because we cannot stay perpetually in infancy. We must be led and taught by the Spirit for us to grow in the spirit. The Holy Spirit forms the character, nature, and personality of Christ in us as He leads, teaches, and guides us. If we are growing in Christ we will live lives that are pleasing to GOD, bearing fruit in every good thing that we do (Colossians 1:9-10).

All spiritual blessings are predicated upon being led, taught, and growing in the spirit.
