“If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” – 2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV

In high school, I used to love mathematics, especially geometry and algebra. In algebra one of the tasks was to solve for X. You were given a couple of unknown variables and expected to work out their value so that you could solve for X. For example they would say X =A+B+C and you’d be given the value of maybe two variables (A, B, C, etc) and expected to work out the value of x. In the above Scripture, the value of X is = GOD forgiving our sins and healing our land (this means A+B+C =forgiveness of sins and healing of our land). This stands to reason that we must determine values of A, B, and C. Lets breakdown these “unknown” variable to understand how we can get to the value of X [this is our intended end, our Cannan if you may].

A: If My people who are called by My name, this shows that only those that belong to GOD can truly be called His people. Romans 8:14 determines who are God’s people (those who are led by His Spirit). Only those who are led can be called by His Name. GOD takes His Name seriously as it is His reputation on the line. So if you claim to be called by His Name (Christian), then you have to be filled and led by His Spirit. This is the variable A.

B: Christ knew that GOD always heard His prayers because He was submitted to His will. It takes great humility to submit yourself under someone and to let that person’s will overshadow your own. As a result, Jesus was given a Name above everything because of His humility (Philippians 2:8). To put it into perspective, it’s like King Zwelithini leaving his throne in KwaZulu-Natal and coming to Johannesburg to clean Joubert public toilets (If you know, you know). The second variable is B (humility).

C: Another important component of the equation is praying and seeking God’s face. This is very challenging to the flesh because it means denying it its pleasures and committing to seeking God’s will instead of your own. Seeking is going deep into God’s agenda and deciding that He should take center stage. When you do this Holy Spirit then reveals the nature of GOD to you. The more you seek the more you become like Him and the more the transformation happens (2 Corinthians 3:18). This, then, causes you to turn away from your wicked ways. This component is so diverse that it requires to be broken down into two separate components (C1 and C2). C1 = praying and seeking, C2 = turning from your wicked ways. You first need to humble yourself to do C1 so that you could achieve C2, you can’t achieve the latter without the former.

When all of the above have been fulfilled, then GOD promises to hear our requests and prayers. These variables must be fulfilled simultaneously and not in isolation for GOD to hear our prayers. We cannot circumvent this process and expect to be successful in our endeavors. No amount of tears or fasting will change God’s principles. To solve for X we must fulfill all the requirements, so that our prayers may be heard. So let us solve for X.

We cannot circumvent this process and expect to be successful in our endeavors.
