“For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch His robe, I will be healed.” – Mark 5:28 NLT
To appreciate the above miracle you need a small tutorial on the effects of bleeding. Your blood has iron (sourced from the food you eat e.g. liver) which is mixed with a protein to form a molecule called hemoglobin (Hb). The function of Hb is to transport the oxygen that you breathe to every single tissue in your body. Your body then uses this oxygen to make energy that fuels your body to perform daily activities (working, walking, etc). When you don’t have enough iron, e.g. either from being vegetarian (meat is a rich source of Iron) or from blood loss (e.g. heavy periods, like the woman in the above Scripture) we call this condition /state Anaemia. Anemia can be mild or severe. The mild disease will cause symptoms like dizziness, weakness, and fatigue. Severe disease (like the woman in the above Scripture) will cause fainting spells, severe fatigue, heart palpitation, shortness of breath (walking 10 steps will cause severe distress), severe and debilitating weakness and if this goes on for years like in her case (12 years) it can eventually lead to heart failure. So daily activities for the woman were very difficult and felt unbearable.
According to the Bible, she had gone to every so-called specialist without success. She had suffered for more than a decade. She probably had accepted her fate and was just waiting for her death, as she had used up all her money/savings in vain. Yet when she heard about Jesus she had renewed hope. The problem is Jesus wasn’t doing door-to-door evangelism. This meant she needed to go to Him. She needed to amass the very little energy she had to go and see Him, as Christ was her last and only hope. And she believed that if she touched His robe she would be healed. The problem is she wasn’t the only one seeking to have an encounter with Christ, and Christ wasn’t waiting for her, He was probably moving around. She probably heard He was in Elloff street and she slowly made her way there, exhausted and out of breath she then discovered he’s moved on to Bree street. Discouragement probably clouded her mind, yet she encouraged herself by saying” If I can touch His robe I will be healed”. She then dragged herself to Bree street still weak and out of breath. Just as she could see the light at the end of the tunnel, her only last Specialist had moved on to Rissik street. This is the time when most of us would give up and just go back home. This is when the troubles of this world begin to choke the Word out of us (Mark 4:19). This is when we remove our focus from Jesus and actually start to drown.
Now that she could see Jesus there was still the issue of all the people around Him. She didn’t have the strength to push her way through the multitudes to get to Him. Here the Scripture is very literal, the spirit was willing but the flesh was very weak (Matthew 26:41b). Now that she was an arm’s length away from finally realizing her decade-long dream, she reached out and touched His robe. All the dizziness, fatigue, determination, and hope led her to this very moment. All the doubt that she went through during her seemingly long walk had led to this potential life-changing moment. In the blink of an eye, she touched Him and received her healing. She felt it immediately and was made whole.
It was her faith that propelled her towards a seemingly impossible journey to receive her healing. It’s the unwavering faith that made it all possible. It’s this faith that caused Christ to notice her. Thousands of people surrounded Jesus, yet power only left Him when the woman’s faith touched Him, literally. This means the people around Jesus had ulterior motives because none of them are spoken of in the Bible. Millions of people attend church every Sunday, how many actually touch Him and He feels it? There was grace for her to receive her breakthrough. In the same way, every one of us has the same grace, it’s what you do with it that determines your outcome.
“For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed” Hebrews 4:2 NIV. Some have faith and store it, while others actually take in and apply it in their lives. These are the ones who benefit from the word of God. The Bible says the woman heard about Jesus and she then decided that she was going to see Him. She was not just a hearer of the Word, but also a doer. This is the secret to her breakthrough. Her faith caused anointing/power to leave Christ, spiritual osmosis if you may.
