“How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping watch [on himself] according to Your Word [conforming his life to Your precepts].” – Psalm 119:9 Amplified

When I was an intern at Bara there was a senior doctor that we were assigned to work under in the casualty ward. This woman was amazing and unshakable. She was very calm under pressure and nothing fazed her. A patient would come in with amputated feet and bleeding profusely, and Lara would be calm. Axes and machetes stuck in the patient’s forehead and she’d still be calm. She’d even crack an odd joke while stitching someone’s pierced heart. For every single case that came into casualty, she knew what to do, she knew what drips to put up, what medication to use and which one’s not to. I asked her how she does it and she would always say it comes naturally and one day I will also be like that. I thought she was patronizing me and thought it was impossible. Then one day, a couple of years later, an intern asked me the very same question. It was only at that very moment that I realized that I was also like Lara. How did it happen? How did I know what to do in emergencies?

Sometimes we look at people that we admire in the walk and ask ourselves how they are able to walk in purity and righteousness. It may sometimes seem so unattainable especially when there are things we may currently be struggling with when our specifically designed thorns seem to be getting the better of us. How do they do it? Why can’t some of us seem to get it right? First of all, condemnation isn’t of GOD (Romans 8:1). These challenges are meant to propel us toward GOD, not away from Him. Conviction shows/proves that you are actually a child of God, it doesn’t mean that you are a lost cause.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” Joshua 1:8 NIV. Joshua took over from Moses and the only thing that GOD gave him was this instruction. This will enable him to live a successful, righteous, and holy life. Everything he needs in his walk with the LORD was contained in this instruction. His successful journey into the promised land with the Israelites was a result of following this instruction. Those that immerse themselves in his Word and meditate on it are always prosperous. The people we envy and wish we were like, are full of the Word. They have not let the Word depart from their mouth and as a result are reaping its fruits, cause, and effect. Every action has a reaction. When you immerse yourself in the Word (action), the fruits will be evident (reaction). Newton’s 3rd law in action.

Back to Lara, she had spent years studying and immersing herself in the theory of medicine. After all these years, what she had read for years she now applies it practically in casualty. The fruits of years of study are evident to everyone who’s around her. In the same way, to live a life that is worthy of the Gospel, one has to be full of the Word. As it’s the Word that corrects and guides you (navigator). Holy Spirit guides you through the Word. “For GOD is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him” Philippians 2:13 NLT. GOD does this through His Word. Walking without the Word and expecting to be prosperous is like hoping to stream a live program without data, it’s impossible. You can’t walk and live righteously without his Word.

Every action has a reaction. When you immerse yourself in the Word (action), the fruits will be evident (reaction)
