“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18

This cannot be more true than in the case of the “Offender” and the “Offended” who are unwilling to make room for reconciliation and peace. When unforgiveness and bitterness have taken root in their hearts and their version of events is now what informs their narrative, destruction becomes inevitable. In Romans 12:3, Apostle Paul warns us not to think of ourselves higher than we ought. That is because when we are full of self-importance, we justify our reasons for offense and why it is proper to harbor resentment towards the “offender”. The inability to forgive and walk in peace with all men is rooted in pride and arrogance and is based on a need to be correct.

Unfortunately, many do not realize that when they are at this point, the Spirit of God is no longer present and the enemy has now taken over. To add a sobering truth… “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5. Simply put, GOD cannot hear the prayers of a proud and unforgiving person. His Word says He RESISTS that person. It is only when we humble ourselves not only to GOD but also to one another, that He will now give us grace. The grace to forgive and to heal. His grace is undeserved favor upon our lives.

It is that grace that answers our prayers and makes a way where there is no way. That enables us to endure hardships during our times of trials. We need it. So when blessings no longer flow easily in our lives and our relationship with GOD feels stagnant, we must look within and examine what darkness that we are harboring in our hearts. Resentment and unforgiveness quench the flow of the Holy Spirit and His blessings. The cost of holding on to them is too high.

Resentment and unforgiveness quench the flow of the Holy Spirit and His blessings. The cost of holding on to them is too high.
